Contrary to the title, this film is not about a superfluous small eye located on someone’s forehead that sees horrible events before they unfold (I really shouldn’t drink when I write these things). There’s always something that initially draws you to a bad horror movie: maybe it’s the chance to see has-been celebrities starving for a paycheck, maybe the DVD box is particularly eye-catching or maybe the premise is high concept. Very rarely, do I encounter the third one, but I did in the case of MY LITTLE EYE, a movie in which five contestants enter a Reality Webcast in which they will each win $1 Million dollars if they can simply spend 6 months in a house. Here’s the catch: If any one of the six contestants leaves the house, everyone loses! I love the concept because with the entire glut of reality TV shows, it’s about time a horror filmmaker (and a good one at that) creatively weaves a plot: “It’s BIG BROTHER with blood.”
The movie takes place in the final week of the competition and everyone is set for their big payday when unusual things start to happen. For example, one of the contestants receives word that his grandfather has died. Then one of the contestants sees a cryptic message on her shower mirror that belies a secret only known by one other person in her past. Finally, a random skier shows up one night, claims that he has never seen their show or any advertisements on the internet and then, after getting drunk with the contestants, has sex with one of the girls (Nudity Alert!). Are these all attempts by the show’s producers to get the contestants to give up and lose the million or in the case of the sex scene, to boost ratings? Who knows? I’m not going to tell you. But I will tell you that it is worth watching this movie to find out. This movie is good enough that we can forgive the Blair Witch similarities in cinematography – lots of night vision close ups and jerky camera movement. The mood shifts slowly from creepy to very creepy and the ending is satisfying. The directing is surprisingly strong and the various camera angles give it the feel that the characters really are being filmed for a television show. I am amazed by the depth of this film and the fact that a B horror movie that I found on Cinemax has so much entertainment value. It just goes to show you that a horror movie doesn’t need a big budget (JEEPERS CREEPERS 2, go sit in the naughty corner) to be successful, but rather a great premise, an excellent director and some good actors can take you to the promised land. Can I get an A-men? Rating: *** (out of four)
