I really love plot lines that can be summed up in a line or two. “A young boy dies tragically and the parents, with the help of a strange doctor, clone their son. When the son reaches the age at which he died, he becomes…evil.” Screenwriter Mark Bomback is one of the more talented writers floating around Hollywood. If you read the trade magazines, you see his name attached to Die Hard 4, working on projects with Bruckheimer and he is just generally accepted as your under the radar go-to-guy for thrillers. Well, somewhere between the original Godsend script (which I read) and the finished product, something went terribly wrong, which in the case of this website, is terribly enjoyable!
Let’s just take a quick aside and talk about Robert DeNiro. He has been spending his acting capital so recklessly, that I wonder if Bobby is okay. If Variety says that DeNiro’s next movie was paid in the form of “suitcase of cash”, I wouldn’t be surprised. Why does he need to do so many movies of low quality one after another? Why don’t we start a petition asking Bobby to get back to his roots, to get his hands dirty and take on a meaty role? Who’s with me???
Well, Bobby’s performance in Godsend was clearly phoned in. He is not convincing as a genetic physicist who seeks out an old friend to ease her suffering over her son and to further his maniacal cloning procedure that would make President Bush blush. However, don’t expect any “smart talk” about cloning in this film, in fact there are some unintentionally comical lines where the characters attempt to intelligently discuss the topic. Upon hearing DeNiro’s plan, Kinear whispers “What you are suggesting is illegal and, not to mention, potentially immoral.” Does that even make sense??? I think Greg Kinear’s should only flex his intellectual muscles as far as those light comedies “Sabrina” or “As Good As It Gets” will carry him.
Rebecca Romjin is smoking hot as usual and I think there was a nude scene that got axed so that they could preserve the sacred PG-13 rating – a lot of good that did for the overall box office! There really aren’t any scary moments in this one. The little boy was sort of creepy and he has tons of night terrors that remind him that he just ain’t right. However, until someone does something truly different, he and the rest of recent scary movie children are just aping Haley Joel Osment as far as I am concerned. Catch it if it’s on cable, but please don’t spend your money on this one.
Rating: * (out of four)
I saw this movie and found it intelligent, delightful and a testament to the resourcefulness of the human spirit. What parent would not leap at the chance to reanimate their deceased child given such an opportunity. Let the evangelical nut bags prattle on allthey wish. GOD, whatever in fact God is, has created human intelligence to do more than sit in pews, bash gays and collect money for their ministers next luxury vehicle. Enangelical nnuit bags are as bad as the zealot ayatollahs they bash. TEN thumbs up for science and the sooner GODSEND becomes a reality for the mainstream the better.
